The Grange and the Astley Ainslie and much of the land lying between the two have been designated as a conservation area under the statutory provisions of the Town and Country (Scotland) Act 1997. With the inclusion of the Astley Ainslie site Historic Scotland gave the area "outstanding" status. The terms of the designation are set out in section D6 of the Appendix to the Central Edinburgh Local Plan. Additional information is available in the Council's Streetscape Manual.
The designation rests on its character of suburban villas set in extensive gardens surrounded by stone walls. The character of the Grange is defined in the Character Appraisal published by the City of Edinburgh Council:
A detailed study of the history of the Grange with particular reference to its architectural merits was made by Mrs Sophia Leonard and in The Green Book published by the Grange Association. A copy can be seen in the reference section of the Newington Public Library.

The Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997 is relevant to the circumstances of the Grange. That Act provides that the local planning authority, in this case the City of Edinburgh Council, must prepare a Structure Plan for its area of responsibility and a Local Plan for individual areas of particular importance. It is essential to take into account the provisions of the Local Plan when considering planning issues in the Grange.
In matters of detail it is important to study the Council's Development Control handbook which sets out the Council's specific policies in relation to a wide range of subjects e.g. their policies for development in the grounds of villas, for private day care nurseries and car parking. This handbook can be viewed at the Council's enquiry desk at Waverley Court, East Market St, Edinburgh and handouts containing individual policies can also be obtained.
