Grange
Conservation Awards January 2009
Proposal 1: Oswald
Road

Work done:
Entry for cars created and
extensive wall building undertaken
Comment:
The two openings are
properly ÔfinishedÕ with tapered stone gateposts. The work undertaken (the
stone work -Ôsquare and sneckÕ on the external wall and rubble on the internal
and the iron work) go above the minimum effort required and are in keeping with
the conservation area.
Proposal 2: 6
Palmerston Rd

Work Done: Extension to side
Comment:
The work done is in keeping
with the original house. The roof line is properly ÔfinishedÕ and the stone
work is of good quality.
The lack of a lintel
arguably leaves the stone hanging
less than comfortably above the opening. PVC double glazing retained.
Proposal 3: 26 Grange
Rd (opposite St. Catherines Place)

Work done: Garage and gates.
Comment:
The addition of lintel
stones within the steel ÔcatnicÕ lintel here, go a long way to making the
opening appear more comfortable.
The extra step taken here on
the decorative flourishes on the gates makes all the difference, going beyond
functional.
Proposal 4: St. Albans
Rd

Work done: New entrance
Comment:
The boundary wall has been
suitably terminated with substantial stone gateposts rather than uncomfortably
chopped with a quick coat of cement, added as is often the case and the gates
themselves make the extra effort with the swept up curves rather than a simple
flat top.

The quality of the tooling
on the stonework is very high.
Proposal 5: Grange
Road
Image: not currently
available.
Work done: New railings and
gate
Comment:
The new railings and gate in Grange Road between Lauder and Tantallon
replace a quite ugly long wooden fence. High quality workmanship in a
very visible location.
